Fifteen years after a floating, self-filtering pool for the East River was conceived, and nearly a year and a half after $16 million in funding was announced for the project in early 2024, the futuristic +POOL is getting one step closer to New York City. In June 2025, Friends of +POOL announced that they had completed construction of a specialized barge to house both the pool and its state-of-the-art filtration system. It will be dry towed from Bollinger Shipyard in Mississippi to a shipyard in New York City, a journey that is expected to take about three weeks. After it arrives, it will be retrofitted into a plus sign-shaped pool once health agencies have approved the final design.

Upon completion, the four branches of +POOL will each cater to different swimmers: one section for kids, one section for lap swimmers, one section for sports, and one section for lounging. In all sections, swimmers will be able to enjoy gorgeous waterfront and skyline views. It will be underpinned by an advanced filtration system within the walls that removes bacteria, contaminants, and odors, leaving safe, swimmable water. +POOL is expected to be installed at Lower Manhattan's Pier 35 in May 2026, and public swimming will be contingent on successful final filtration tests.
The latest +POOL update comes at a time when New York City is literally heating up with temperatures in the high eighties and low nineties in the forecast. But while the city's public beaches opened on Memorial Day weekend, the outdoor public pools are not scheduled to open until June 27, the day after the last day of school in New York City.
For some lucky residents, though, the pool is already open.
