Once upon a time, a certain class of New York apartment seekers was happy to sacrifice square footage in favor of a manageable commute to the office. But after months of working remotely, sometimes in space shared by children attending school remotely, some may be wondering if the trade-off was worth it. Coronavirus vaccinations have recently begun in New York, but it will take several more months before it will be safe to resume normal, maskless life.

That is not to say, though, that it is time to give it up in favor of suburbia. While the developers of a new class of buildings in Brooklyn, Queens, and New Jersey couldn't have imagined the environment in which they would launch sales, they may nevertheless find it to be an auspicious one. The buildings are set in walkable communities, and the units themselves offer spacious layouts (sometimes outdoor space to boot!) at a fraction of the cost of their Manhattan counterparts.
