Condos and rentals aren't the only buildings seeking to make the most of a High Line location. Construction is underway at an 11-story office tower designed by COOKFOX at 512 West 22nd Street. Two blocks south, construction has begun at 520 West 20th Street, where Morris Adjmi has been commissioned for an 85,000-square-foot, seven-story office building.
520 West 20th Street is known as The Warehouse for its past use as a warehouse and distribution factory for the Carolina Manufacturing Company. Developer Elijah Equities has had the building in the family for generations and wasn't interested in tearing it down. That's where Mr. Adjmi, known for his ability to modernize old structures while respecting their history, came in.
"520 West 20th Street will continue to respect the historic character of the neighborhood while embracing the spirit that the repurposing of the High Line created." - Morris Adjmi
The new design keeps the original brick, steel, and concrete structure intact and puts a modern, cantilevering, three-story glass addition on top. Open floor plans will allow for creative, collaborative workspaces, and the building will be wired to support all technology requirements. In addition to private outdoor space on select floors, there will be a roof terrace with views of the High Line on all sides. The building will also offer an on-site bike room.
Employees will appreciate an excellent choice of restaurants around The Warehouse. It is surrounded by the galleries that brought this part of Chelsea to prominence, and only steps away from an entrance to the High Line.
