A new, 500,000-square-foot development at 90-02 168th Street in Jamaica is officially underway. The former parking lot was originally conceived as a single large department store, but the plan fell through and RFPs were requested last September. The Greater Jamaica Development Corporation announced a joint venture between BRP Companies and Wharton Properties to buy and develop the site with more than 70,000 square feet of retail and more than 300 mixed-income residential units. Shortly after the announcement, a rendering of the development designed by Perkins Eastman was revealed. The groundbreaking is expected to take place in the second half of 2018.

The new development is part of an affordable housing boom in Jamaica. Other projects include The Crossing at Jamaica Station, another development by BRP which will create 669 affordable apartments; 177 affordable units at 89-50 164th Street; and a NYPD parking garage at 168th Street that is being converted to 350 affordable apartments.
