Between One Hundred Barclay, One Wall Street, and Walker Tower, Art Deco skyscrapers designed by Ralph Walker have been transformed from telecommunications offices to some of Manhattan's most highly coveted condos. His practice extended across the river to Newark, where he built the original corporate headquarters for the Bell Company. Nearly 90 years after it was built, the 21-story “Bell Building” still features its original brick and sandstone façade as well sculptures of telephone operators and symbols of connectivity.

The Bell Building went on the National Historic Register in 2005. More recently, L+M Development Partners has led the charge to revitalize the tower, now known as Walker House, and downtown Newark along with it. Inglese Architecture & Engineering acted as the project architect for the now mixed-use building with design support from CetraRuddy. The retail space at the base will house a brewery and rock-climbing gym, the office space welcomed its first tenants, and leasing has launched on the apartments above.

The 211 studio through three-bedroom units start at $1,875/month and feature expansive windows, high-end finishes, stainless steel appliances, quartz counters, and in-unit washer/dryers. The top floor is devoted to residential amenity space and includes a fitness center, yoga studio, library lounge, catering kitchen and dining room, and rooftop terrace with outdoor seating, fire pit, and grills. Additional amenities in this doorman building include port cochere, bike room, and storage.
One of Walker House’s biggest draws is its easy access to both public transportation and local highways that allows for a quick commute to Midtown Manhattan. However, the building is part of a newly robust local community. Walker House is across the street from Washington Park, three blocks from New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and surrounded by popular restaurants.
