Spring is a time of renewal and change, a theme that is playing out along Central Park South. After over 500 collisions between pedestrians and cyclists between 2018 and 2022, work is set to begin on an overhaul of the South Loop on Monday, March 17. West Side Spirit notes that the immediate goal of the repaving project is to create more space between foot and bike traffic, while long-term goals include adding a raised pedestrian lane.
Weather permitting, repaving work on the South Loop is expected to be complete by April 28. But as of this writing, Grand Army Plaza South is closed to accommodate a comprehensive restoration of the site. This includes new plantings, pavement repairs, upgraded furnishings (including benches), and conservation of the over 100-year-old Pulitzer Fountain. Such changes will ultimately be to the benefit of the Central Park South streetscape, but make for a somewhat chaotic atmosphere in the immediate term.
