Sales have recently launched at 256 East 4th Street, a five-story boutique condominium with a modern yet contextually sensitive red brick facade in the heart of the East Village. Two of the six units, including a floor-through three-bed with direct elevator access and a private terrace, have entered contract, and the one public availability as of early June 2026 is a half-floor one-bedroom is asking $1.195 million.
The condominium's sales launch comes over 100 years after a low-rise Neo-Gothic building with a red brick facade, arched windows on the upper levels, and a pale cornice was constructed as a synagogue/shul for the Ukrainian Lemberger Congregation in 1925. In the 1970s, as the Puerto Rican population of the East Village and Alphabet City grew, it was converted to Iglesia Evangelica Bautista, a Spanish-language Baptist church; aside from replacing the Star of David on the building's roundel with a cross, its exteriors were largely unchanged. Public records show that Iglesia Evangelica Bautista sold the building to developer Ariel Shomolov for $2.95 million in November 2024, and an entity dubbed 89 Development LLC filed permits for a new building in March 2025.

Local preservationists hoped the building's original facade could have been preserved amidst a residential conversion, but project architect StudiosC Architecture found that decades of water damage made this unfeasible, and the old building was demolished. It was replaced with a low-rise condominium where the facade is accentuated by structural piers clad in a deep red Roman brick that creates sharp angles intersecting horizontally and vertically. Renderings show flower boxes in the windows.
All interiors feature high ceilings, wide-plank oak floors, abundant natural light from oversized windows, in-unit laundry, built-in Russound speakers, and video intercom systems with remote access. The kitchens come outfitted with white oak cabinetry, Calacatta marble countertops veined in soft grays and gold, and appliances by Wolf and Sub-Zero, including wine storage. The bedrooms have deep closets, and the bathrooms offer soft limestone floors with radiant heating, marble-backed vanities, and state-of-the-art fixtures.

256 East 4th Street is located a short distance from the recreational offerings of Tompkins Square Park, which include a basketball court with smart hoop, two playgrounds, a handball court, and one of the first dog runs in a New York City park. It is also located in close proximity to several community gardens and many popular restaurants, bars, independent boutiques, and theaters and galleries in the East Village and on the Lower East Side. The Second Avenue F train is a short distance from the building.
In Q1 2026, the average price of an East Village condominium was $1.463 million, holding relatively steady year-over-year. 256 East 4th Street is part of a recent batch of new construction condos in the neighborhood. On the former site of a parking garage between Stuyvesant Street and Second Avenue, 220E9 recently sold out despite never publicly listing the apartments inside.

Elsewhere in the East Village, the longtime Chris French Cleaners building at 101 East 9th Street has been demolished, and work is underway on a 10-story, 15-unit boutique condominium helmed by Moonshot Development and designed by BKSK Architects. A new condominium is also in the works for 122 East 11th Street, on the northwest corner of Third Avenue and East 11th Street.
