Hammam treatment at The Dominick via Haute Grandeur Hammam treatment at The Dominick via Haute Grandeur
In recent years, hammams have recently been touted as a hot new wellness practice. However, their history dates back to the Roman empire and the public baths with varying temperatures to stimulate circulation. After the fall of the Roman empire, hammams thrived in the Byzantine empire, incorporated cleansing scrubs and massages, and became an integral part of village life.

Centuries later, the bathhouses of ancient villages have made their way to New York City neighborhoods. The no-frills, over 100-year-old Russian & Turkish Baths has been an Alphabet City institution before the neighborhood even got its name, and newer establishments like AIRE Ancient Baths, Argana Day Spa, and QC NY offer a more luxurious atmosphere inspired by the bathhouses of old.

Residential developers have also embraced hammams and added them to their amenity packages. It remains to be seen whether they will become the social center of the buildings, but there are already a few certainties: At a time of year when temperatures are in the single digits and New Yorkers' skin is drying out, a visit to a hammam will get your blood moving and prime your body for recovery. These are made with highly luxurious materials that offer unmistakable pampering before even meeting an attendant. It would be highly inadvisable to bring a phone or laptop into one, which forces visitors to disconnect and relax.
