The Smile is an 11 story, 233 apartment rental at 148 East 126th Street in East Harlem, completed in 2019. Designed by Bjarke Ingels of BIG and developed by Blumenfeld Development Group, it is defined by a concave, checkerboard façade clad in blackened stainless steel panels, a material Ingels compared to elephant skin.
The façade drapes between the neighboring buildings and leans back from 126th Street, bringing light and air to the sidewalk while accommodating setback requirements. The T shaped structure extends through the block to a three story base on 125th Street, and 20 percent of its apartments are designated as affordable housing.
Apartments have ceilings of at least nine feet, floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed concrete ceilings, in-unit laundry and substantial closet space. Open kitchens with breakfast bars recur in larger layouts, while studios commonly use galley kitchens. South facing homes have open Midtown exposures, and several apartments look toward the Harlem River.
The building has 20,000 square feet of amenities, including a rooftop pool, outdoor movie theater, roof terrace, fitness center, spa with a dry sauna and steam room, coworking studio, screening room, demonstration kitchen, lounge and game room. A garden, bike room, on-site parking, outdoor gathering areas and a 24 hour attended lobby complete the amenity program.
