As Governor Cuomo's recently announced reopening plan shows, New Yorkers will not have to spend the summer confined to their apartments. There will be more to do as businesses open up again, and newly launched street closures will allow extra space to enjoy the warmer weather at a safe social distance. In such an environment, studios can seem like an appealing way of setting up a New York City home base.

Indeed, well before the first case was reported, there were certain advantages to living in a studio. In co-ops, smaller square footage mean smaller maintenance fees. Ingenious storage solutions can make small units seem larger and ensure that the money saved on maintenance doesn't go towards housing one's belongings elsewhere. Not to mention they can serve as a way to live in a historic building without breaking the bank - e.g., Jaws author Peter Benchley had a studio in the landmarked Hotel des Artistes, and it is now listed for under half a million dollars.
