A building dating back to 1907 on Harlem's 125th Street corridor is making the transition to contemporary rental residences, following the trend of several nearby lots.

Previously a commercial property, the adaptive reuse of the structure at 271 W. 125th Street has created 30 studio to two-bedroom rentals on the upper three of its four floors. The collection is called The Bailey Lofts and leasing recently launched, handled by Keller Williams. Current listings on CityRealty show one-bedrooms from $2,493/month and two-bedrooms from $3,155/month.

Interiors are a blank slate - and any renter can personalize the space with a touch of color and the right furnishings. Listings boast hardwood floors, operable windows, and the unique convenience of coming equipped with a bike rack. One thing's for sure - the ceilings are quite high, especially when compared to some newer rentals buildings.

Lab-like kitchens have Corian countertops, gray and white cabinetry, and stainless steel appliances including a dishwasher and microwave. Spacious porcelain-tile baths are equipped with glass showers, and each unit has a washer/dryer. A virtual doorman adds convenience to the building.

The lucky renter of the penthouse, currently listed for $5,950/month, will be pretty impressed with the unit. The spacious two-bed, one-bath has a huge living and dining area, and also a private roof terrace. The space is decked over and has planters, and a creative individual can design the perfect outdoor oasis.

City records date the property to 1907 and it's the only prewar structure that remains at the four corners of the 125th Street and Eight Avenue intersection. The location is known for rich history and culture (the Apollo Theater is on the same block), but big-box retailers continue to emerge as 125th Street grows as a shopping corridor. Just next door is a Banana Republic Factory Store and a Red Lobster.

Permits for The Bailey Lofts development were filed by building owner United House of Prayer with Suzane Reatig Architecture as the applicant of record. Other permits have been filed and withdrawn by the same owner dating back to 2003.
