Dating back to 1825, it may be possible to trace Soho's rich history through 431 Broome Street alone. It was originally constructed as a single-family home, but a later owner would convert it to a boardinghouse with a saloon at the parlor level. The last of the residential tenants left in the mid-1870s, and the building would house various businesses (a commercial printer, an office fixture dealer, and a plumbing shop among them) for the next 100 years (h/t Dayonian in Manhattan).

Like many Soho buildings, 431 Broome Street was used for artists' lofts in the 1970s during the neighborhood's renaissance. However, the most significant change came in 2012, when it underwent a two-year, $6 million renovation and conversion to boutique hotel The Broome. The landmarked facade was kept intact, and an adjoining building was constructed on a rear lot to create an interior courtyard.

The hotel is in a prime Soho location, but one that was unquestionably affected by the pandemic. When the building went on the market in December 2021, listing broker Rafael Sitruk told the New York Post that he saw a wide range of possibilities for it, including converting it to a highly luxurious single-family mansion. A pool has already been carved out, and outdoor space includes the courtyard and a roof terrace. It also comes with 5,000 square feet of air rights, which could either be sold or used to expand the building per the buyer's wishes.

The building was originally listed for $19.99 million, but recently had the price reduced to $16.9 million. It is one of the 219 sales listings that had their prices reduced over the past seven days.
