Would-be Manhattan buyers save for years to make hefty down payments, but that's just the beginning. There are closing costs to keep in mind, and then there will be common charges (for condos) or maintenance (for co-ops), taxes, and mortgage payments to make every month. It sounds intimidating, but New York City has several programs in place that temporarily reduce carrying costs in the form of tax abatements.
