While most dog owners would say that the holiday is every day, February 22 has been declared National Walking the Dog Day. Dog owners are advised to celebrate by taking their furry friend on a long walk in a new setting, and there is ample opportunity for that in New York. Dog runs to accommodate breeds of all sizes have taken shape in parks in all boroughs, and greenways surrounding the New York City waterfront offer a scenic space for a walk.
New Yorkers love their pets, and officials have taken notice. Governor Hochul signed legislation to ban the sale of dogs, cats, and other live animals at pet stores in December 2022, the better to crack down on puppy mills and encourage adoption from reputable organizations, and legislation is set to take effect this year. Additionally, a number of developers and landlords have recognized the power of the “pet parent” and implemented pet-friendly policies, not to mention amenities and services catering to four-legged residents as well as two-legged.
