The business week ending October 13, 2023 was abbreviated due to the federal holiday on Monday, but the Manhattan residential real estate market remained busy. The top apartment sale was a five-bedroom condo with a large private terrace at the Robert A.M. Stern-designed Superior Ink that closed for $16,375,000, or slightly below the $19 million asking price when it entered contract in summer 2023. However, public records indicate that the seller, British business executive Rodney Aldridge, nevertheless made a profit, having bought the apartment for just over $14 million in 2009.
Robert A.M. Stern Architects is the designer of some of today's most in-demand luxury condominiums, but Old World elegance has not been forgotten. The week's second-highest sale and top co-op sale took place at the Rosario Candela-designed One Sutton Place South, where Residence #6A sold for $9,999,999. The seller of the five-bedroom, six and a half-bath spread is listed as a trust linked to private equity executive John Vogelstein.
Also of note last week, public records indicate that a few short months after it was relisted for an even $36 million, the townhouse at 29 Beekman Place has sold for $27,500,000. Media executive and CBS founder William Paley built the 12,230-square-foot townhouse for his family in 1934; decades later, Princess Ashraf Pahlavi, twin sister to the last Shah of Iran, bought the townhouse after leaving her home country in 1980 during the Iranian Revolution. The Real Deal announced the latest sale and reported that it was sold to the United Kingdom’s secretary of state for foreign, commonwealth and development affairs. The seller, identified only through an LLC, paid $11.5 million for it in 2020.
