Many have said that New York looks and feels emptier than usual on lockdown, and figures have emerged to prove that the city truly is. CityRealty data shows that the number of rental listings nudged up from 7,793 in January 2020 to 7,845 on March 16, the day after Governor Cuomo announced the lockdown, to a whopping 11,526 as of today.

Moreover, some of New York's most architecturally inspired, amenity-rich condominiums are also quite a bit emptier. According to a map released by The New York Times, the city's wealthiest neighborhoods - the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Soho, and Brooklyn Heights among them - saw the biggest drop in residential population since the coronavirus pandemic hit. But tellingly, the mass exodus has not led to a spike in homes for sale. Are these incredible apartments being sublet?

In happier times, WalletHub ranked New York as the third most fun city in the United States. Even now, the city's parks, bike rental facilities, streets of attractive architecture, and wide variety of restaurants offering takeout and delivery make New York ideal for a staycation - as long as masks are on and social distancing is practiced, of course. As officials actively work to meet the health and safety benchmarks required to start reopening, take a look at listings for rent in Manhattan and Brooklyn's most upscale condos.
