Before putting a home on the market, it's not uncommon for sellers to spruce it up, either with small tweaks or a full remodel. This allows the buyer to move into a home with up-to-date infrastructure and appliances, not to mention avoid supply chain woes and worker shortages that still persist. Additionally, in certain New York buildings, moving into a renovated apartment allows buyers to avoid the hassles of obtaining board approval and only having a certain window in which to do work.

However, it is important to note that a renovation is not a panacea that results in instant sales and a tidy profit. For one thing, some buyers prefer to choose their own finishes, fixtures, and appliances. For another, even the most meticulous designer renovation cannot compensate for such factors as a tough board, a somewhat out-of-the-way location, or a price that might have been too ambitious in the first place.
