Sometimes the world of luxury Manhattan real estate can feel like a game of pass-the-parcel, with luxury properties owned by one bold-faced name being sold to another. That seemed to be the case as October 2023 drew to a close, when a number of sales linked to public figures were recorded.

Doug Band — Sold for $47,000,000

Last week, The Wall Street Journal announced that former political advisor Doug Band had sold his Upper East Side townhouse in what is one of the biggest New York townhouse deals of 2023. Mr. Band and his wife, Lily Band, bought the townhouse from the estate of banker/philanthropist David Rockefeller for $20 million in 2018 and spent the next four years renovating it. The buyer was identified as Australian tech entrepreneur Bijan Tehrani.

Earlier this spring, a penthouse at Upper West Side condominium The Westly set a new price record for the highest price per square foot achieved by a condo above 86th Street. A number of high-priced sales have come in since then, the latest being a purchase by Kroll executive Michael Frishberg.

According to Promix Nutrition’s website, Albert Matheny founded the company after being unable to find products that met his exacting standards for quality, performance, and safety. He appears to have brought the same standards to his real estate – after he bought the apartment from Kanye West for $3 million, he embarked on an extensive renovation. Before joining BNY Mellon as Chief Financial Officer last year, Dermot McDonogh spent decades at Goldman Sachs. Both firms’ offices are in Lower Manhattan, and Mr. McDonogh’s personal preferences appear to be there as well: Public records list him as the buyer of a Tribeca condominium.

While not nearly as lavish as some of the real estate seen on the hit show, the Upper West Side home of Succession producer Frank Rich and his wife, author Alex Witchel, enjoys such features as a classic six layout, generous proportions, and views of the Hudson River. The couple put it on the market in May 2023, and public records indicate that it has sold for slightly under ask. It is not clear what they paid for it.
