According to a new study by RentCafe, the Millennial generation (defined here as those born between 1981 and 1996) experienced the largest growth in homeownership of any generation in the past five years, with the number of Millennial homeowners in New York jumping 90% in that time. A closer look at the data shows that this was largely attributed to a combination of family support and buying at depressed prices during the pandemic. As such, it remains to be seen whether this is the start of a growing trend or a momentary blip.

In the meantime, the Millennial generation remains the largest percentage of renters in the New York metro area. New rental filings have plummeted in the months since the 421a tax abatement expired, but a number of new buildings are getting ready to welcome the first residents. The apartments inside will be reached via smart entry doors and feature oak wood flooring, kitchens with Miele appliances, baths with radiant heated floors, in-unit washer/dryers, and Wi-Fi HVAC systems.
