A Farm Grows in Battery Park

MAY 27, 2011

An urban vegetable garden in Lower Manhattan gets kids digging and gives local restaurants a new source for fresh produce.

An acre-sized urban farm is the latest addition to Lower Manhattan’s Battery Park. Located along State Street at Pearl Street, the downtown farm comes courtesy of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. The idea for the garden originated with a request from the Millennium High School Envrionmental Club to plant a vegetable garden in the park, and it will put 650 students from local schools to work maintaining the farm, with help from Battery Conservancy volunteers. Shane Neufeld, architect and lead designer on the project, used over 5,000 bamboo poles donated by artists Mike and Doug Starn in the garden’s design.

Local chefs are getting involved as well: Zak Pelaccio of Fatty Cue and Wade Burch of Merchant plan to to make use of seasonal produce from the farm in their nearby restaurants (via Crain’s NY). The urban farm was planned as a two-year project; it will end when construction begins on the Battery Garden Bikeway, a new bike path that will connect the east and west sides of the city. The Battery Conservancy is seeking volunteers to help with weeding, harvesting, repairs and other gardening tasks beginning on Saturday, May 21.
