A New Flea Bites Manhattan

APRIL 23, 2010

Brooklyn Flea may have set the nouveau flea market trend in motion, but Hester Street Fair brings the new market experience back over the bridge.

Located in the Seward Park Co-op at the corner of Hester and Essex Streets in the Lower East Side, Hester Street Fair, like its Brooklyn cousin, promises to be a restaurant-and-retail opportunity a world away from the standard-issue funnel-cake-and-sunglasses block bash. Fashion-forward finds from vintage—and vintage-inspired—sellers like Streethawk (handmade dresses) and Severely Vintage (vintage furniture) will share temptation duty with treats from Macaron Parlour, Luke’s Lobster, The Meatball Shop and Montreal-style bagels via Brooklyn’s Mile End.

The new market is the brainchild of The Big Social, a group that includes SuChin Pak, MTV News host and social and environmental change activist and her partners in the real estate, digital marketing and business sectors. Their mission: to honor an area that was once home to New York City’s largest and oldest pushcart markets by selling quality goods and food, and to create a space that reflects the dynamic energy of the Lower East Side.

Hester Street Fair opens for business on Saturday, April 24, and will be open on weekends through December.
