Along for the Ride: Bikes in the City

JUNE 3, 2010

With Bike Month behind us, New Yorkers keep on pedaling.

New York City was recently named the 8th most bicycle-friendly city in America by Bicycling magazine. More bike lanes have made it even easier to use pedal power to get to work, get a great workout, or just ride for fun. Online and mobile applications like Map My Ride help you plan a ride across the city from park to path. A great bike-and-boat adventure: The ferry from Pier 11 near Wall Street will take you and your ride directly to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, where there’s a 5 mile bike trail that runs right along the beach. Once you’re hooked, try the upcoming Harlem Valley Ride or the more urban Tours de Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens.

Also helping to fuel the bike boom: Words from passionate cycling aficionados David Byrne (who shares his thoughts on how getting around by bike can improve our lives in Bicycle Diaries) and BikeSnobNYC blogger Eben Weiss (who looks at life on two wheels with a healthy dose of snark) provide inspiration. The League of American Bicyclists and Bike New York provide plenty of local resources. For a celebration of the bicycle-as-perfect-object, visit the Museum of Arts and Design before August 15 for Bespoke: The Handbuilt Bicycle, part of an exhibition series exploring trends and innovations in the design world.
