Art Start: Art Collecting for Beginners

AUGUST 11, 2009

The vast art community in New York City offers a wealth of opportunity for the beginning collector.

Budding art collectors often get their start on the advice of established collectors who can tell them what might be the Next Big Thing. Books can offer good advice as well.

The annual Affordable Art Fair, held every May, is the budding collectors' version of the Armory Show. Collective studio tours like the three-day DUMBO Art Under The Bridge festival are a great opportunity to view art in hundreds of artists' studios at once.

Benefit auctions are another way to snap up a piece from a favorite artist at far less than gallery price. Artists' Space holds a holiday event called "Night of a Thousand Drawings" in which works on paper by well-known and emerging artists are sold for $30-$60. A few local galleries—like Mixed Greens—take a fairly commercial angle on introducing buyers to fine art, featuring reasonably-priced works by contemporary artists that are easy to view and buy online or at their Chelsea showroom. The web itself is a great resource. Many artists run their own blogs, offering pieces at far less than they might be elsewhere; collective art stores like Little Paper Planes connect artists with art lovers and collectors on a budget and regularly post news about local auctions and events.
