Best Landscaped Roof Decks on NYC Apartment Buildings (Part One)

MAY 11, 2012

With the sunny season on the horizon, it’s hard not to envy those who can hit the roof for some morning sunbathing or evening entertaining amid leafy gardens, cozy cabanas and maybe even an outdoor shower, and a classic Manhattan rooftop view may be one of the best perks of city life. These NYC apartment buildings offer landscaped roof decks and some noteworthy outdoor extras.

The Chelsea Mercantile building at 252 Seventh Avenue gives residents plenty of sun-worshipping space with a 10,000 square-foot landscaped roof deck and can’t-stop-staring city and Statue of Liberty views. Run out of refreshments? There’s a Whole Foods market right downstairs.

101 Warren Street in TriBeCa offers a sun deck adjacent to a state-of-the-art fitness center, perfect for outdoor yoga or a post-workout nap.The 35-story full-block condominium building also features an elevated pine forest that functions as a private park. Not a prerequisite for making the list, of course, but the ground level retail space here includes a Whole Foods market as well.

Residents of Downtown by Starck at 15 Broad Street have full use of the roof garden at the adjacent 23 Wall Street, overlooking the New York Stock Exchange and featuring a 5,000-square-foot park with a reflecting pool, a lounge and a dining area. Inside, there’s a lap pool, a yoga center, a bowling alley, a screening room and more.

You can count on great city views–with Central Park at front and center–from the landscaped roof deck above the 20th floor of Linden 78 at 230 West 78th Street on the Upper West Side.

The Diamond House condominium at 170 East 77th Street on the Upper East Side lets the sun shine in with a sky-lit fitness center in addition to its landscaped roof terrace.
