Beyond Walking: Pet Fitness

JUNE 30, 2009

Your pampered pooch gets the best treats, travels in style and has a beauty regimen worthy of a supermodel, so why should Fido have to settle for second best when it comes to fitness?

Running Paws is the city's best-known doggy-fitness enterprise, offering programs that include jogging, running and rollerblading sessions based on findings of canine health professionals. Daily workouts look a lot like our own gym routines, complete with warm-up walks, interval training, and cool-downs. Additional perks include Private, Exclusive and Special Attention (for dogs with behavioral issues) sessions which run from $32 to $150 per week. The company also runs Puppy Paws, offering socialization and basic training for the little ones. Most of the action takes place at the company's main barking space, Running Paws Athletic Club on the Upper East Side, where your best friend can also indulge in grooming and spa treatments and check in for cage-free boarding while you're on vacation.

If you've suspected that your pup needs more chill-out than workout, fear not. Doga (dog yoga) is the newest trend in pet fitness. According to the Doga pioneers at East Yoga, it's all about "bonding with your pet and giving the dog 45 minutes of undivided attention," while learning calming massage techniques that help circulation and digestion.
