Big Apps: The Winners Are In

FEBRUARY 23, 2010

The inaugural NYC Big Apps competition puts technology to work for better city life.

In 2009, the City of New York, as part of a drive to become more transparent, accessible and accountable, announced its first Big Apps Competition: Mobile and online software application developers were challenged to create the most useful, appealing, effective, and commercially viable applications for delivering information from the City of New York’s Data Mine. In addition to $20,000 in cash prizes, lunch with the Mayor and other perks, winners get the satisfaction of knowing that their expertise can give the New York City experience a digital boost.

The winners—from over 80 submissions—have been announced. The Best Overall Application Grand Prize went to the WayFinder app, an Android phone application that determines the best route to the city’s subway and PATH train stations from any location. Another winner, Taxihack, allows passengers to post real-time comments about taxicabs and their drivers. Big Apple Ed compares and analyzes city schools based on criteria like test scores and per-student spending. Another notable app (among the contest’s Honorable Mentions), Trees Near You, identifies virtually every tree in NYC based on the city’s Tree Census.
