Branch Out and Keep the City Green

JUNE 24, 2008

Find out a little more about a block, a building, the citymaybe even your neighborswhen you get your daily SmartMatch recommendations.

Plant a tree and grow the future
New buildings are sprouting all around us, but the city's green spaces are no less important. Trees clean the air, cool our streets, and, yes, raise property values by making neighborhoods more attractive and comfortable. You can help the city stay gorgeous on summer days by planting a tree or caring for the ones we already admire.

MillionTreesNYC
The MillionTreesNYC initiative aims to plant and care for one million new trees in the city's five boroughs by 2017, and there are plenty of ways you can help by planting a tree in your yard or community, signing up for a street tree stewardship program and more.

Trees New York
Trees New York helps protect and maintain trees that already exist by teaching residents how to care for them.

Green Thumb Community gardens
Keep it green by volunteering to help the city's impressive network of community gardens. Green Thumb Community gardens is the nation's largest urban gardening program, helping over 700 neighborhood groups maintain their urban oases. The program provides materials and technical support for the city's gardens.
