City Island: In the City, a World Away

MARCH 2, 2010

The last thing they’d expect to find in the Boogie-down Bronx: An Island.

Accessible by MTA bus, subway and the City Island Bridge, tiny City Island is indeed part of the Bronx, but what you’ll find there are quiet homes and winding streets that you’d expect to see in a quaint New England fishing village. The historic seaport community located just beyond Pelham Bay Parkway is home to approximately 4,500 residents and a diverse ecosystem of birds, deer, coyotes and more common critters like raccoons and skunks. There’s one post office, a hardware store and a local paper, The Island Current.

No spot on the sleepy island is more than a few minutes from the water–part of the reason it retains its small-town feel, as described in a recent New York Times article. The island is known for its seafood restaurants and there are antiques shops, art galleries, pubs and a number of historic Victorian mansions. It also hosts four yacht clubs and several commercial marinas as well as the Columbia University Sailing Team. The island’s location and unique setting make it a perfect spot for filming, and the movie City Island, starring Andy Garcia and Julia Margulies, scheduled for release in 2010, was shot there recently.
