Community Volunteers: Bad News Leads to Good Intentions

FEBRUARY 10, 2009

People are getting involved in community service in record numbers.

According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, non-profit organizations have been noticing a significant increase in community volunteering in recent months (and January is typically a slow month) after a several-year slump.

Why the rise? One reason is obvious: People who have been laid off or downsized have more time to spare and volunteering is a good way to stay in touch and build networks. Another reason is that President Obama has outlined an agenda for getting more people involved in public service, which should add even more incentive. Also, as individuals and families are hit by hard times, need is greater than ever, leading to the desire to lend a helping hand.

Volunteer travel is also on the rise, hitting a sweet spot for folks with a wanderlust but without the means for expensive vacations. Organizations like Voluntourism and One Small Planet help interested travelers find opportunities to see the world while helping those in need.

If you'd like to join fellow New Yorkers and lend a hand in the community: New York Cares helps mobilize New Yorkers who are interested in volunteer service.
