Copycat Crimes: Knocking Off New York

APRIL 6, 2010

It’s said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

It isn’t news that ex-pats and wannabes around the world would get the urge to re-create a slice of the Big Apple. The East Village Club Bar & Kitchen in London’s trendy Shoreditch district clearly pays homage to the fast-living past of the downtown Manhattan neighborhood. And the owners of Hell’s Kitchen restaurant in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, MN admit that their eatery was “named a teeny bit after the famous New York neighborhood.” But who could be better at knocking off the City that Never Sleeps than the Other City That Never Sleeps.

For “New York entertainment with a Las Vegas vibe,” the New York, New York–Las Vegas Hotel and Casino was designed with Gotham in mind, from the luxe to the sleaze. “Vinny,” a Yankees fan from “Da Bronx” greets visitors on the hotel’s web site and shares his restaurant picks. There’s even a Nathan’s Famous. The Park Avenue and Broadway Deluxe suites are the Mini-Apple’s top tier rooms.
