Eights and Aces: Cool deals and (almost) free meals in your neighborhood

AUGUST 15, 2008

8Coupons.com wants you to shop—and save—locally
More fun than frugal, more high-tech than low-budget, 8Coupons.com is a free service that celebrated a year in business in New York City on 8/8/08. The idea behind the site: Freebies, coupons and discounts from local restaurants, bars, spas, retail shops and entertainment spots are searchable by specific neighborhood and sent right to your mobile phone. The folks behind 8C hope to help local businesses this way as well.

The fun part: Deals end in (or other wise relate to) 8. "Ocho Loco" specials go above and beyond with extra perks. This month's birthday bunch includes an 8-cent Hot Dog, Latke, or Matzoh Ball Soup at Friedman's Delicatessen in the Meatpacking District, 8-cent t-shirts at American Apparel, and 88-cent manicures at a local spa. The site's bite-sized, modular design highlights each day's enticing new batch of giveaways. You can browse or search by neighborhood, "clip" the coupons you like, save them and share with friends. They're also testing a new feature that lets site visitors share deals they find elsewhere. Check out the specials, text (or email) 'em to your mobile device, and the promo code you'll use at the store is included in the text message you receive. Then, just show up, eat, drink, shop, help the neighborhood's economy and save a buck or two in the bargain.
