Fall Harvest Celebrations for City Kids

OCTOBER 4, 2011

You don’t have to live in farm country to enjoy the season’s harvest; celebrations, festivals and more are ripe for the picking all over the city.

The Amazing Maize Maze (weekends, September 17-October 30; Queens County Farm Museum, 73-50 Little Neck Parkway) may have a corny name, but it may also be your only opportunity to get lost in a corn maze (there’s a Maze by Moonlight adventure, too!). Also at the Queens County Farm Museum: The Children’s Fall Festival (Sunday, October 16, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.) features old-school outdoor games like sack races and trinkets-in-the-haystack as well as live music, pig races and arts and crafts, and families are encouraged to attend in costume. The Pumpkin Patch (weekends through October 30) is part of a free-to-visit working farm where you can choose and buy your own Great Pumpkin. New York Restoration Project’s Harvest Festival (Saturday, October 15, 2-6 p.m.; Sherman Creek Park, Harlem River Drive and Dyckman Street at Tenth Avenue) celebrates the season at a picturesque waterside park with a pumpkin carving contest, art and garden workshops, live music and more.

The free Fall Kids’ Fest (Saturday, October 15, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Madison Square Park, 23rd Street at Madison Avenue) in Manhattan’s Flatiron district lets kids give their Halloween costumes a trial run, pick a pumpkin from a pumpkin patch and decorate a jack-o’-lantern as well as enjoy live music, games, arts and crafts, face painting and snacks. The Rockaway Fall Festival (Sunday, October 16, 12-3 p.m.; Bayswater Park, Beach 32 Street and Beach Channel Drive) features pumpkin-picking, costume making, pony and hay rides, live entertainment and refreshments.

Mommy Poppins offers a helpful pick-your-own guide to the city and surrounding areas, and the MTA has some great suggestions for a fall harvest weekend just beyond city limits.
