Fire and Water Set the Tone in Top Condo Lobbies

OCTOBER 15, 2009

Waterfalls and firewalls get creative to welcome visitors, residents and lobby lizards.

The Caledonia leads the pack when it comes to tricked-out lobbies featuring nature-as-sculpture. The West Chelsea condo's lobby was described in a NY Times article as "a rarefied world etched in water and fire, stone and glass." The aforementioned water wall cascades into a reflecting pool below, and the "fire" flickers in a "kinetic, pulsating light sculpture," lighting the concierge desk with a warm glow.

The Platinum
at 247 West 46th extends a similarly impressive welcome with a 26-foot fireplace and a moat of moving water surrounding the lobby. The Chelsea Stratus at 101 West 24th gives its lobby waterfall an organic intimacy with walls and flooring of slate and teak wood. Brooklyn gets its feet wet with a "water feature" and "green living walls" in the lobby of the Williamsburg Edge. And while sexy brand-name residences imply entryway drama, more down-to-earth waterworks can be found in the lobbies at 325 Fifth Avenue and Rivergate at 401 East 34th Street.
