Fulton Street Market: Fresh Food Where There Was Once Fish

JUNE 11, 2010

A new market brings farm-fresh food to former Fish Market stalls.

Though the historic Fulton Fish Market moved uptown to Hunt’s Point in the Bronx in 2005, a new food market has opened in its former stalls in the Fulton Street/Seaport district to give lower Manhattan workers, visitors and residents more fresh-from-the-market options.

Fulton Stall Market—the only outdoor food market serving lower Manhattan’s historic Seaport District—is now open, featuring a hand-picked collection of locally produced seasonal fruits and vegetables, cheeses, breads, cut flowers and potted plants, area roasted coffee, and New York state wines from over a dozen vendors such as Cascade Mountain Winery, Milkmade Ice Cream, Norwich Meadows Farm products, Soons Orchard & Farm Market, Ronnybrook Farm Dairy, Hoboken Farms, Sour Puss Pickles and Spices & Tease, as well as a number of artists and craft makers like the Etsy New York Street Team.

Market manager Sara Weeks Dima, formerly of City Bakery, hopes the new market will become the only spot local shoppers need to hit to find all the fresh ingredients they need for dinner. The market can be found on South Street between Fulton and Beekman Streets from noon to 6 p.m. every Sunday and Wednesday through October 3.
