Getting Away: Sophisticated Traveling

JULY 20, 2010

With a European Euro vs. US Dollar exchange rate in our favor, cool-hunting American travelers are heating up a handful of European cities.

Finding themselves among what the Global and World Cities (GaWC) Research Network (an urban studies think tank) calls “alpha cities,” a handful of old-world, culturally-rich European cities have been basking in a new glow of desirability, taking advantage of the internet’s power to shrink the globe into a small world. Some top contenders in the small, cool world contest: London, Berlin, Copenhagen, Istanbul, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Stockholm.

International travelers have easy access to a new crop of online publications that highlight international cultural happenings like the Berlinale (film, Berlin), All Tomorrow’s Parties (music, London) and Sonar Festivals (music, Barcelona) as well as new local restaurants, hotels, shops and the hottest in nightlife. Newsletters like CoolCapitals and Le Cool Magazine deliver a calendar full of cutting-edge cultural events in cities like Barcelona, Instanbul and others right to your inbox. International style site Superfuture lets a growing network of world travelers supply the scoop, rating and recommending the best of hotels, restaurants, shops, parties and events.

And some travelers are choosing to stay awhile: Expatriate communities are growing as professionals and creatives choose to wait out uncertain economic times in the U.S., and publications like Exberliner, a Berlin cultural magazine geared toward English-speaking expats, make sure there’s never a dull moment in your adopted home.
