Going to the Chapel: Wedded Bliss Without the Fuss

JUNE 12, 2009

Step off the bridal path and say I Do–my-own-thing.

Around the time when the wedding industry goes into high gear and couples pay top dollar for all the trimmings at destination spots, the Lower East Side art/performance/pop-up gallery Grand Opening is ringing in a "recession proof and ultra cool solution" to the big-deal-wedding bell blues in the form of a Vegas-style Wedding Chapel. Instead of heading for Sin City to engage in live-for-the-moment matrimony, drop by their storefront at 139 Norfolk Street for all the (very) basic trimmings including an ordained minister and live internet streaming to keep remote friends and family in the loop. They'll even do mock weddings (for all the fun without any of the commitment).

If you just haven't met Mr. or Ms. Right (or if you have—and you look at him or her in the mirror every day), skip the prenup and marry yourself! In her role as "The Encouraging Priestess," performer/artist L. Gabrielle Penabaz celebrates self-love with her Til Death Do You Part – Marry Yourself! performances at international arts festivals and events. This weekend, you can tie the knot at the Figment art festival on Governor's Island.
