Going Up:Private Elevators

MARCH 4, 2010

The key is when your elevator goes right to your home.

Private elevators (meaning direct access an apartment’s entryway) became—and often still are—a regular fixture in big-city lofts carved from industrial city warehouses. Since each floor is likely to contain only one unit, the setup works for everyone involved. And though residents have the advantage of private entry from the street, the building’s owner is most likely responsible for keeping the elevator up to date, inspected and repaired.

Private elevators are less common in larger residential buildings, except as a super-amenity for penthouse-dwellers. The Mandarin Oriental offers private elevators to their—literally—top residents. Units accessible this way give lucky residents direct private access to the hotel residence’s spa and glass infinity pool downstairs.

Though there may be a downside,—a young Chelsea loft-dweller and frequent party host has found sleeping guests in her elevator post-revelry—there are also no fellow residents to complain about said lift-lapses. And, as New Yorkers are known to be particularly adaptive creatures, a private elevator might come in handy if you run out of closet space.
