Grape Expectations: Wine Tastings in the City and Beyond

OCTOBER 6, 2008

A city of wine connoisseurs offers a non-stop opportunity to sample the finer things.

Grape growers, wine merchants and those who love them want nothing better than to give you a chance to expand your wine horizons. New York City Wine Classes can get your palate ready for action. Wine event lists like funwithwine.com and localwineevents.com can help you keep up on what's being served, and the Taster's Guild is happy to provide more formal introductions. Once you've got the habit, most wine stores throughout the city will pop a few bottles on a daily basis to offer customers a taste, and stores like Tribeca Wine Merchants often host events around tastings.

Once you've sampled your way through the urban bounty, the North Fork of Long Island is known for its vineyards, and fall is harvest time, with a full calendar of events at over 30 tasting rooms providing a chance for oenophiles and other visitors to get a taste of local offerings of everything from merlots to chardonnays—there's even a wine camp. Fourteen of the area's wineries are located on Rt. 25 between Riverhead and Greenport, so they're hard to miss (remember to have someone else drive if you'll be doing the tasting.).
