House Calls: Docs Who Deliver

DECEMBER 3, 2009

Today’s small crew of physicians who make house calls is a bit different from the big-black-bag set of yore.

House calls are something we associate with the good old days when the milkman delivered milk and telephones were attached to the wall by a cord. But in recent years, cost-cutting and job scarcity has made home visits a thing of now rather than the past.

Sickday Medical House Calls says their fee is fixed, and it’s not likely to be reduced. New York House Call Physicians is “a concierge (boutique, retainer) family (general) practice” for “discerning patients who value high quality medical doctor care,” and will work with your insurance to get reimbursed for VIP care. Travel MD focuses on foreign visitors. “If you require being seen in a hotel, office, or apartment, at a production shoot, music venue, or at our medical clinic at any hour,” their docs are for you. A list from the American Academy of Homecare Physicians (AAHP) will point you in the right direction.

You may have better luck at getting Fido looked at in your living room. A handful of the city’s vets list house calls among their services, including City Pets (The House Call Vets), Downtown Veterinary House Calls and The St. Mark’s Veterinary Hospital.
