Ice, Ice, Baby: Downtown Hotels Freeze Up for Skaters

JANUARY 7, 2011

When it’s too cool for a dip in the pool, chic boutique hotels roll out the ice rink.

The High Line-straddling mid-century-design paradise the Standard hotel (848 Washington Street) isn’t letting its outdoor space go to waste in cold winter months: The boutique hotel has installed an ice skating rink on the front patio. The 3,000 square foot (58’ by 49’) skating space that opened on December 18 (the “official” opening will be in mid-January) offers a rinkside coffee-and-snack bar with a special aprés-skate menu. Also on the horizon: pick-up ice hockey in the mornings and skating lessons all day. The rink will be open Monday through Wednesday 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Thursday and Friday 11 a.m.-12 a.m., Saturday 10 a.m. til midnight, and Sunday 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Tickets are $12; skate rental $3.

The W New York Downtown hotel (123 Washington Street) is using a similar strategy to make use of its fifth floor wraparound terrace when it’s too cold to hang out. The Financial District boutique hotel has transformed the space into an itty bitty ice skating rink for the duration of the winter. The 12’ by 40’ skating surface (about 400 square feet; it only fits about 15 people) uses hybrid-ice synthetic rink panels to make things more manageable. In keeping with boutique hotel culture, there’s a skate-up “ice bar” featuring specialty cocktails. This “skating experience” will be available through February 15, 2011, Monday through Sunday, 2 p.m.– 10 p.m.. Tickets are $12 per guest, including skate rentals. (via Curbed NY)
