International Confection Connection

AUGUST 5, 2011

A new Upper East Side candy store will be a welcome sight if you’re craving sweet treats from England.

The world may seem smaller but our yearning for childhood treats can go unsatisfied if we’ve moved halfway round the world. Fortunately we live in an international city full of expats, and everybody comes from somewhere with candy. The London Candy Company has shelves stocked with Brit favorites old and new: Flake, Bounty and Aero candy bars, Cadbury chocolates, wine gummies, Bassett’s Jelly Babies and many more. Though some items look just like good ol’ USA favorites (Snickers and M & Ms, for example), the store’s owner explains that versions of the candy made for the UK and European market are made with cane sugar rather than corn syrup, making them less sweet, and, to those who have gone without, more special (This Week in New York). Kids and parents alike love to visit and linger; Stumptown coffee is served at the coffee bar—the buzzy boutique brand hails from Portland, OR, but then again, England isn’t exactly known for its coffee—alongside across-the-pond favorites like Ovaltine and Horlicks.

The London Candy Company joins Sockerbit, (also new as of April), a West Village shop serving up Swedish sweets in bulk. Goods that may seem odd to non-Swedes—like the eponymous sockerbit (sugar cube) candies—conjure fond memories of Scandinavian childhood. And yes, they have Swedish fish.
