It's the Little Things: City Drivers Fall for Small

SEPTEMBER 15, 2009

It's hard not to notice the new wave of vehicles designed with the environment and size in mind.

Whenever someone asks which car is best for driving in the city, a common answer is "taxi!" or even "subway." A car is often considered a liability: Unless you've got an En-suite Sky Garage like the one at 200 11th Avenue, parking can be a hassle and expensive.

The Mini Cooper helpedg to usher in the small-is-beautiful sentiment. It's elegant, adorable, and easy to maneuver in and out of tight spots. As far as environmental innovation, parent company BMW has begun rolling out the BMW Mini E, its first all-electric vehicle. The city has already jumped on the opportunity to put the little guys into action: In a partnership with BMW, they're putting a few E-cars on cruise duty as part of the mayor's PLaNYC emission reduction plan. Other itty-bitty city cars include the Honda Fit (best known for its relative safety for a tiny ride), the Toyota Yaris, and the fits-in-your-purse Smart. For those who want to slowly wean themselves from the SUV habit, the Scion xB (made by Toyota), combines big-ride looks with small-package specs.
