Kids at Art: Creative Classes and Programs for Kids and Families

MAY 12, 2009

The plethora of art-loving adults in New York City guarantees a wealth of creative kids' activities.

At the New Museum's First Saturdays for Families (the first Saturday of every month), the downtown art museum hosts programs designed for children and young adults 5 to 15 years old, including kid-friendly short film screenings in the downstairs auditorium. At the Met, Drawing in the Galleries lets kids in grades 3 through 8 explore drawing techniques while they create landscapes, still lifes, portraits, figure drawings, and more.

MoMA's Tours for Fours reaches out to youngsters who are a bit too young for big-kid arty activities. Every month features a new theme, and interactive galleries and discussions give tykes time to explore what may be their first introduction to modern and contemporary art. Summerscapes art camp at the Guggenheim offers kids a chance to investigate the museum's collections and work on their own creations; This year's Frank Lloyd Wright exhibition is a focus for this summer's program.

Smaller, private programs like Kids at Art and The Art Farms offer unique hands-on classes and workshops for children of all ages, while at Cupcake Kids, young chefs-in-training can make their cake and eat it, too.
