Many Icy Returns: NYC Icy

JUNE 18, 2010

A beloved spot for cool treats gives the East Village the scoop just in time for summer.

NYC Icy—the place that sold cold, crave-worthy ices to overheated passersby from a stall-sized spot on Avenue B before the gourmet ices-truck trend existed—closed up shop some years ago. Though they resurfaced in Brooklyn and, briefly, in Hell’s Kitchen, the near-perfect summer chill-out treats were sorely missed in the East Village. So neighborhood residents were thrilled to see the owners, Suzy and Jonathan Leeds, scooping exotic and classic-flavored cups from another tiny storefront on Avenue A between 6th and 7th Streets late in May. The couple says that their newest spot will be a temporary affair—they’ve nailed down the location for 6 months. But if all goes well, look for locations throughout the city.

Those who remember the original will look forward to favorites like Icy Tea, Apricot Ginger, Vanilla Malt, Mexican Chocolate and Mango-Basil, and they’ll offer the usual rotating selection (20 at a time from over 200 flavors) in their signature icy and creamy varieties. The store’s Kensington, Brooklyn location at Church Avenue between Coney Island Avenue and East 10th Street will remain open, so Brooklynites can be cool, too (via The Feed).
