Mattress Shopping Should Not Give You Nightmares

NOVEMBER 30, 2010

A new mattress is not only a major purchase, it’s one on which you’ll spend 1/3 of your life.

Mattresses seem to come in more flavors than Baskin-Robbins, but experts agree that which one you choose has more to do with your personal sleep preferences than anything else. Consumer Reports and Consumer Search guides help take some of the mystery out of buying a new mattress.

Innerspring (the name is pretty self-explanatory) mattresses are still the most popular. Memory foam (Tempurpedic is the best-known brand) and its slightly more durable cousin, Latex, are newer contenders in the mattress sleep-stakes. Converts swear by foam’s body-hugging properties–and the material may keep its shape longer.

Big local department stores like Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s as well as Sleepy’s and 1-800-mattress carry popular brands like Simmons, Sealy and Serta and the higher-end Stearns and Foster. CitiSleep is another local favorite.

For the pickier sleeper, Charles H. Beckley Inc. on East 137th Street in the South Bronx hand-fills each locally-made mattress with horsehair. Each one is hand-stitched, hand-tied and individually upholstered. Comfort House specializes in hard-to find shapes and sizes–you’ll be able to find a round mattress, or a mattress for your yacht. Companies like Woodstock Organic Mattress craft their bedding from organic (NY Times), all-natural materials. This article from Slate explains further how to keep your mattress purchase as green as possible to help you sleep even better.
