Move Right In, Sit Right Down: Furnished Apartment Solutions

JANUARY 7, 2010

Furnished apartments can be ideal for renters who need to stay in town for a while but need more-than-hotel hospitality at a less-than-hotel price.

Furnished apartments represent a solution for people who plan to stay in the city for business and are looking for a more comfortable–and economical–solution than a hotel stay. Corporate apartments kept by companies who frequently host execs, employees or clients from out of town are perhaps the most likely to keep furnished flats. Vacationers and those relocating to a new city may find the furnished solution ideal as well.

Rents are generally far higher than those of unfurnished homes since you’re paying for the convenience of a made bed, a throw-covered sofa, gourmet cookware and a full set of chef’s knives (some will even throw in a private chef and cooking classes), cleaning service and more. For longer-term (but not permanent) stays, it can also be a good idea to rent a furnished apartment for a month or so while you’re looking for permanent digs.

Real estate agents can hook you up with a furnished apartment, but agencies like Furnished Dwellings, Maison International and Apt 168 specialize in finding furnished spaces. Temporary apartment chains like Oakwood and AKA also offer furnished apartments with every imaginable amenity in cities throughout the world by the day, week, month or longer.
