Senior oasis suggested for city park; City Planning green-lights skyscraper zoning for Hotel Pennsylvania site

The Parks Department may be considering a plan to designate part of John Jay Park just for seniors. The first of its kind in the city, the plan would provide low-impact exercise equipment, checkers and chess boards and space for outdoor yoga classes and other activities with the idea that older people on a fixed income might be unable to afford a gym.

The City Planning Commission has approved zoning changes to permit Vornado Realty to build a major skyscraper on the 80,000 square foot site of the Hotel Pennsylvania. The company has been acquiring land in the area near the hotel, which is directly across from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden, for several years with a tall tower in mind. The 1,700-room hotel was erected in 1919 and is one of the last surviving examples of big-city hotels built to accommodate train travelers disembarking at the original Pennsylvania Station building which was demolished in 1964.
