New Developments in the News

SEPTEMBER 27, 2010

A new Harlem apartment complex offers residents a second chance; Bids come in for phase one dibs on Hunters Point South.

“If you can make it in New York you can make it anywhere, but sometimes you need a second chance to get your priorities back on track.” So spoke Mayor Bloomberg to celebrate the opening of Castle Gardens, a mixed-use, affordable, supportive and green apartment complex at 625 West 140th Street in Harlem. The new residence—developed under the mayor’s New Housing Marketplace Plan for creating affordable homes—will offer apartments to homeless and formerly incarcerated individuals and low income families. Additional amenities include a computer lab, Wi-Fi, library, community room, landscaped roof terraces and play area and a large service center.

The first phase of Hunters Point South, a 6,000 unit housing complex on the East River in Queens, has received seven bids for development. The project is intended to serve the housing needs of a currently under-represented middle class—upon completion the project will be the largest affordable housing complex built in the city since the 1970s—and will include an 1,100 seat school on the first two parcels of land to be developed.
