New Developments in the News

FEBRUARY 7, 2011

Nouvel’s 11th Avenue “vision machine” reportedly not perfect; A new ‘Burg building gets a second chance.

While it can be considered a success story in many ways—mainly for not falling victim to the stalled construction nightmares that have plagued high-end developments since the Wall Street bust—Jean Nouvel’s “Vision Machine” at 100 11th Avenue may not be the picture of perfection its designer had envisioned. Though only 13 of the building’s 54 units remain unsold, reports of leaks in the ceiling and the much-discussed glass curtain wall have surfaced, as have claims that corners were cut to save on costs during the construction of the lobby and adjacent garden, causing similar problems.

A 17,000 square foot residential building at 170 North Fifth Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn is getting a new start on construction; New Jersey-based developer Urban American LLC has taken over the project, taking advantage of a “loan to own” deal to cover the $8 million cost of completion. The company has not yet determined whether residences at the prime Williamsburg location will be condos or rental units.
