SHoP Architects to design first Atlantic Yards towers; Pyramid design proposed for new Hell's Kitchen residence and retail space

Developer Forest City Ratner has chosen architecture firm SHoP—designers of the Porterhouse building in Chelsea—to design the first residential tower at Brooklyn's long-anticipated 22-acre Atlantic Yards project. The company is the developer's latest pick since Frank Gehry was removed from the project in 2009. SHoP is also designing the first two apartment buildings and a school at the Hunters Point South project in Queens and has submitted designs for the new South Street Seaport project.

Architect Bjarke Ingless, principle in the architecture firm BIG, recently presented a stunning pyramid design for a new apartment building to the Hell's Kitchen Land Use Committee of Community Board 4. The design for the 700-unit apartment building at 57nd street and12th Avenue resembles a "warped pyramid," with retail space and a cultural center in its lower levels, and featuring staggered "fishbone" balconies and a large elevated courtyard. The developer plans to seek a LEED Gold Certification for the project, so it's worth noting that BIG recently won a competition in Mr. Ingless's home country of Denmark for designing a waste-to-energy plant that doubles as an artificial ski slope.
